Like Everything Else 80, Leotards Are Making a Comeback!

Fashion, like many other things in history, seems to run in cycles. Bell bottoms came back afros, and the 70's shaggy look back left and came back again. The cycle continues in the dance wear, and it is obvious when you walk into a nightclub or hip concert: leotards are back!

The leotard originally peaked during the days of disco and Fonda in the 1970's. Today, more than 30 years later, the dress in one piece, is occurring in the fashion magazines, concerts, and in vintage shops. Leotards are back on the heels of the other 70 and 80 such as clothing and leggings skinny jeans, and the trend is apparently being embraced by the masses.

The original leotard appeared for the first time in 1859. Named after the creator, a french aerialist, Jules Leotard, it shows first during a performance of french Flying Trapeze. The first edition of clothing was a hand knitted sweater which cover the wrist to ankles. In fact, it was more of a unitard as a leotard. Stories abound about revealing the nature of the garment drawing as many people as the execution itself, which should not venture so far from today's reality either.

From ballet artists, showgirls, modelling lingerie, leotards became part of popular culture through the years 1960 and 1970. However, since the late 80's and 90's passed, leotards been limited to the form of ballet performances and rarely seen in pop music and nightlife to major markets once the hair band era past. That's all changed now that the first decade of the 21st century marches towards completion.

One group that did not need to be informed that leotards are back is superheroes. Many heroes of a comic book is dressed in cape and leotard standard attire. In fact, we can say that Halloween and the affinity of young boys for superheroes, it's what leotard kept alive thanks to the industry of the past decade.

It is true, leotards are back. Almost 20 years that gangs of hair and costumes unitard gone the way of dodo, the look is coming back with leotard performers, dancers, and clubbers alike. The new trend is finding its way into pop culture consciousness by being simple, sexy, and the year. Everything in the story goes in cycles, including fashion, so it is not surprising clothing wonder one piece is back. What's next, moon boots and parachute pants?
